One Day Great Ocean Road
After a pickup from your city hotel, we travel over the
infamous Westgate Bridge towards
Victoria’s south-west coast. We pass through Geelong, the second
largest city in Victoria, before reaching the start of the Great
Ocean Road in Torquay. Our first stop for the day is at Anglesea
where we observe wild grey kangaroos at the local golf club. Lorne
is our next stop for some morning tea and a chance to take in the
beauty of the Southern Ocean and surrounding foothills.
Not far from Lorne we introduce our first treasure chest on the
Great Ocean Road. With the use of old newspaper clippings and
photos we recall the feats of the people involved in creating the
road. Kennett River is the next stop allowing you the opportunity
to see koalas in their natural environment. Lunch is at Apollo
bay, enjoying some of the gourmet local produce.
On our way to the Twelve Apostles we pass an Aboriginal site
dating back over 5000 years and relive the struggle of two
different cultures when the white man arrived.
Dinosaur Cove is not far and also has a deep historical
significance for the region. Just 16 years ago a new species of
Dinosaur, dating back 100 million years was found here. We then
arrive at the Shipwreck Coast and visit the amazing Twelve
Apostles. Here your guide will explain their creation and constant
reformation.
Not far is Loch Ard Gorge where in 1878 there was a tragic
shipwreck. Only two people
survived and we bring the story to life handing around artifacts
from the wreck while reading their diary notes on how they managed
to survive.
We then turn for Melbourne traveling through some of Australia’s
most fertile land and the world’s third largest Volcanic plain. We
arrive back in Melbourne around 1900.
