Henry Jones Art Hotel Hobart Tasmania Australia
Located right on Hobart's harbour-front, The Henry Jones Art
Hotel, an ingenious mix of contemporary design elements with
traditional building structures and artworks installed throughout,
is Australia's first and only dedicated Art Hotel. Here you'll be
fascinated by the unexpected combination of the antique and the
ultra modern.
A row of
historic warehouses dating from the
1820’s and a former IXL jam factory
have been transformed into an
enthralling first class hotel showcasing
the work of Tasmania’s finest visual
and performing artists.
Designed by award-winning architects,
the Hotel is itself a work of art. From its
original and beautifully crafted staircase
to the restored machinery and the magnificent all-glass Atrium, The Henry
Jones reflects the fascinating influences
of its rich colonial past and early
trading history with India and China.
From its inception, the Henry Jones
has been designed as an Art Hotel.
Much of the arrangement, individuality
and distinctiveness of the art exhibited
within the Henry Jones rests on
architect Robert Morris-Nunn’s visually
exciting preservation of the textures
and colours of the old industrial site.
The selection of particular artworks
also reflects the Hotel’s close
ongoing relationship and near
proximity to the Tasmanian School of
Art - one of Australia’s premier art
and design schools.
The furniture and fittings add
another exquisite layer of quality
to the architectural scheme. Many
unique materials, especially Tasmania’s
unrivalled timber veneers have
been used in the designs, which
have been developed in conjunction
with renowned Tasmanian furniture
designer Kevin Perkins. Furniture
created by Pippa Dickson and
drawings by Lindsay Broughton, both
from the Tasmanian School of Art and Furniture Design are on permanent
display in the hotel foyer.
A stereoscopic photographic
installation by Martin Walsh and work
by Karen Lunn are on display in the
Jones & Co foyer. Work by other
acclaimed Tasmanian artists or art
photographers such as Milan Milojevic,
Christine Scott, Barbie Kjar, Raymond
Arnold, Tracey Cockburn,
Maria McDermott, Geoff Parr and
Simon Cuthbert are exhibited in the
rooms and public spaces throughout the hotel
