The Tree Houses
Nested 30 feet (10 M) above the ground in the canopy of a native Manuka grove, each Tree House accommodation has spectacular views of Kaikoura's dramatic mountains and surf-washed Pacific coastline.

Unique New Zealand accommodation, nested 30 feet (10 M) above the ground in the canopy of a native Manuka grove, each Tree House has spectacular views of Kaikoura's dramatic mountains and surf-washed Pacific coastline.

As with the Lodge, the Tree Houses are meant to be a contemporary complement to the natural environment. Their exteriors are clad in native woods and copper shingles. Large windows bring the tree canopy right into the bedroom. We designed the furniture and had it crafted by local woodworking friends.

Upper Branch Tree House

We have five one bedroom Tree Houses available. These provide an intimate treetop retreat in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Each One Bedroom features:

  • A wood burning fire place with light filled seating area

  • Hapuku Lodge’s custom made extra large king bed (can be converted into two twin beds)

  • LCD TV, DVD/CD player, iPod sound system

  • Heated towel rails and floor

  • Couple’s spa bath

  • Rain fountain shower experience that opens directly onto tree top deck

Lower Branch Bedroom

Located beneath two of our One Bedroom Tree Houses are the Lower Branch Bedrooms. Booked in conjunction with a One Bedroom Tree House, they form a Family Tree House. A Lower Branch Bedroom can be booked independently as well. Smaller than the One Bedroom Tree House and with a few less appointments, the Lower Branch Bedroom is a comfortable choice for those looking to stay in a Tree House on a budget.

The Lower Branch Tree Bedroom offers:

  • Hapuku Lodge’s custom king or twin beds with a rollaway available for a child

  • Bathroom with shower, heated towel rails and floors

  • Electric fireplace

  • LCD TV, DVD/CD player, iPod sound system

  • Twin decks; one for sunrise and one for sunset

Family Tree House

Families traveling with children over the age of 5 will find our two Family Tree Houses ideal. The two stories of the Family Tree House are composed of a One Bedroom Tree House above a Lower Branch bedroom, joined by an enclosed stairway. Think Smith Family Robinson with a flat screen and spa bath!

The upper bedroom offers:

  • A wood burning fire place with light filled seating area

  • Hapuku Lodge’s custom made extra large king bed (can be converted into two twin beds)

  • LCD TV, DVD/CD player, iPod sound system

  • Heated towel rails and floor

  • Couple’s spa bath

  • Rain fountain shower experience that opens directly onto tree top deck

The separate lower bedroom is smaller than the bedroom above. It accommodates 2 adults or 3 children. The lower bedroom offers:

  • Hapuku Lodge’s custom king or twin beds with a rollaway available for a child

  • Bathroom with shower, heated towel rails and floors

  • Electric fireplace

  • LCD TV, DVD/CD player, personalized iPod sound system

  • Twin decks; one for sunrise and one for sunset

The Olive House Suite

The Olive House Suite is a two-story building located 80 meters from the main lodge. On the ground floor is our olive press and conference room. The top level is our most spacious accommodation choice, an open floor plan apartment. The Olive House Suite includes all the features of our six guest rooms as well as:

  • 360-degree views of mountains, sea, olive orchard and deer herd

Dining
Serving breakfast and lunch for guests and dinner for guests and visitors by reservation, our kitchen focuses on preparing fresh and flavorful food, sourced whenever possible from local purveyors and organic growers with whom we often have a direct relationship. With this farm gate to plate philosophy in mind, and in keeping with the environment, our resident chefs create world class food that remains unpretentious and focused on the flavors of fresh quality ingredients.

Dinner is 3 courses with multiple choices within each course, created from seasonal produce. Wine, cocktails and canapés are complimentary before the meal. Dinner is at private tables in the lodge, warmed by a well stoked fire and looking out to the deer paddock and mountains.

Each morning, our cooked and continental breakfast options are a la carte, with fresh locally baked breads and pastries fresh coffee, tea and juices.

We can accommodate most dietary concerns, though we can better provide for your needs with advance notification.

Activities
The waters off the Kaikoura coast are extremely rich in marine life. So much so, that New Zealand Geographic calls Kaikoura, “A maritime Serengeti”, “a Sea World without Walls”. The natural landscape creates an abundance of activities in and around Kaikoura for guests to explore.

Hapuku Lodge is a great base camp from which to undertake a marine safari. World famous whale watching, giant albatross encounters, playful dolphin and seal swimming, sea kayaking, and deep-sea fishing are available year round.

For those staying off the high seas, options include night sky tours, Maori cultural tours, scenic flights, winery tours, horseback riding, biking and great hiking (or tramping as we call it in NZ).

It is less than a kilometer down our country lane to the acclaimed ocean surf of Mangamaunu Bay.

And guests can use the Lodge's mountain bikes (and helmets) to tour the local by-ways.
