Hike
Mountains to Sea & Sand
Fly by helicopter into the main alpine valley of the Mount
Earnslaw massif called Earnslaw Basin. The Earnslaw valley has
been formed by the Earnslaw Glacier, with its huge ice cliffs that
tower 3000ft to 4000ft over the head of the valley and dominates
the whole area.
The valley is about 10 miles long, with the lower two thirds
covered in native forest; we fly into the upper third of the
valley and walk up, and through the glacial moraine.
This is a magical area, surrounded by high peaks covered in ice
and snow; waterfalls cascade off the rock cliffs covered in moss
and lichens.
It is sheltered and during summer can be sunny and warm, where
alpine plants abound; very few people go there, as the track into
the valley is rough and little used.
The afternoon is spent flying through New Zealand's magnificent
Southern Alps, down big river valleys to the Tasman Sea to walk on
the beautiful beaches of the wild and remote West Coast of the
South Island. Walk along a remote West Coast beach with the Tasman
Sea as a backdrop.
Take the opportunity to see wild life first hand and prospect for
greenstone or Paua (abalone) shells.
Our aim is to challenge you to the degree that makes for an
experience that is enjoyable, unforgettable, and a highlight of
your visit to New Zealand.
