Set on 6,000 acres near Matauri Bay, Northland, The Main Lodge at Kauri Cliffs affords spectacular 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Cape Brett and the offshore Cavalli Islands are part of the panorama which can be viewed from the verandas, lounge, card and dining rooms.

Facilities include two Astroturf tennis courts, an infinity swimming pool with spa and a fully equipped fitness centre. Kauri Cliffs has three secluded swimming beaches, which are also available for picnics and barbeques.

The Lodge accommodation has 22 guest suites, and a Two Bedroom Owner’s Cottage. Every suite offers its own private porch, bedroom with sitting area and open fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and bathroom. The cottages are nestled in a native forest overlooking the Kauri Cliffs golf course and the Pacific Ocean.

The main lodge, which overlooks the golf course and the Pacific Ocean, consists of a spacious beamed living room, meeting room, card room, and small computer room. Gourmet a la carte dining is available in the main dining room or on the verandas.

Amenities include two Astroturf tennis courts, an infinity swimming pool with spa and a fully equipped fitness centre. Kauri Cliffs has three secluded swimming beaches, which are also available for picnics and barbeques.

Breakfast
Breakfast is a buffet of local and imported fruits, home-made muesli and cereals, yoghurts and freshly baked muffins. In addition, a hot menu featuring eggs, pancakes, crisp bacon, ham, sausages and ricotta hotcakes may be ordered.

Lunch
A formal three-course lunch is available. Alternatively, there are a variety of sandwiches, salads and desserts to choose from.

Picnics
Wonderful picnic sites abound on the property. We have three secluded beaches, several waterfalls and stands of magnificent bush. A choice of delicious picnic lunches is available.

Cocktail Hour
The cocktail hour is an excellent time to meet fellow guests. Hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and a wide range of wines, beer and spirits are available.

Dinner
Our a la carte dinner menu changes nightly and features local produce and seafood. The best New Zealand lamb and beef are served. Executive Chef Barry Frith oversees the culinary team. Pastry chef Quentin Sere is a master of exotic and tempting desserts.

Dinner Attire
Gentlemen are required to wear jackets during cocktails and dinner. Jackets are available to borrow. Room service and private dining are available.

Accommodation

The Suites

Kauri Cliffs consists of eleven outlying guest cottages, each with two guest suites providing twenty-two accommodation units at Kauri Cliffs. Every suite offers its own private porch, comfortable bedroom with sitting area and open fireplace, walk-in his and hers wardrobes and a bathroom with a shower, bathtub and his and hers vanities. The cottages are nestled on the edge of a native forest overlooking the ocean and golf course.

The eleven cottages comprise 16 Deluxe units (approximately 750 sq ft / 69.7 sq m) and 6 standard units (approximately 601 sq ft / 55.9 sq m) which are nestled on the edge of native bush looking east from private verandas across the golf course and the Pacific Ocean. They are in a staggered row to the north of the main lodge building along a meandering tree studded path.

The main bedroom features an open gas fireplace, superior mini-bar, large armoire with a TV, DVD player, CD player, super-king bed (able to be split into 2 super-singles), rattan armchairs, writing desk and ottomans.

The ‘Security’ rooms

There are two “security” rooms in addition to the 22 suites. Featuring two single beds, ensuite bathroom and wardrobe, these rooms are used predominantly for accompanying security, drivers, minders or children.

Activities

On Property Activities

Wonderful scenic attractions and activities are abound near Kauri Cliffs. Tours feature visits to the Ninety Mile Beach, Tane Mahuta (New Zealand’s largest Kauri tree), Doubtless Bay, the Puketi Kauri Forest, Rainbow Falls, historic Russell and the Waitangi Treaty House. Magnificent sand dunes abound near Ahipara where all terrain vehicles may be rented. Arrangements can be made to see these attractions by guided motor tour, helicopter or aeroplane.

Private Beach Barbeque
Combine one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with fresh grilled seafood or lamb, and local produce partnered with fine New Zealand cheese and wines. Your barbeque will include your own Kauri Cliffs chef. Transport to and from the beach will be provided. For those who opt to walk, the trek is 35 minutes via the golf course and trail near the 7th tee. Walking shoes or sneakers are advised. 24 hours notice is required.

Picnic Hampers
Our three private beaches and the waterfall provide a beautiful and picturesque setting for a picnic. Walk or be driven from the Lodge. If you wish, you can drive part of the way to the beach and then continue with a brisk walk.

Land Based Fishing
Fishing is a religion around these parts. Our local guide will take you to one of the beaches on the property. You may well hook snapper or kahawai (similar to a blue fish). Bring your catch back to the lodge and our chef will prepare it for your dinner. This is fresh fish at its best! A big part of this fishing experience is taking in the serenity and beauty of these spectacular surroundings. Please advise us if you would like some refreshments to take with you. (A cold beer has been known to encourage the fish to bite!) Please note this is a tidal activity so the times change daily.

Sea Kayaking
There is no better way to relish this sub-tropical paradise than by sea kayak. Our experienced guide will brief you on safety procedures and paddling techniques before embarking on an aquatic adventure along some of New Zealand’s stunning coastline. Guests will be offered local anecdotes and an informative commentary of the regions flora and fauna.

Guided Bird Watching
Northland is home to many of New Zealand’s native birds. Seasonally, the region also plays host to several international avian visitors. Our expert, Russell, a member of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand since 1963, will take you on a guided tour around the property to view our unique bird life.

Nature Walks
We have some beautiful walks on our 6000-acre property ranging from a 10-minute bush walk, which takes in the magnificent Kauri Tree (700-900 years old) to a two-hour walk that includes a visit to the waterfall, Waiaua Bay or Little Takou Beach. These are some magical spots to visit. The kitchen can provide you with a snack pack of light refreshments and other essentials if you like.

Boar Hunting
Wild boar are plentiful in the area. Join Pere, our farm manager, on a traditional New Zealand pig hunt. This is an early morning activity and can be very strenuous. Boar can be hunted with a gun, or as the New Zealanders prefer, mano-a-mano with a knife.

Possum Hunting
Possums are a major pest and are a threat to native birds and flora. Departure time is just after dark. A 4WD vehicle will transport you to the hunting zone where a guided walking hunt will commence. When the terrain permits, a vehicular mule or quad bike will be the mode of transport. We invite you to join us in the eradication of this pest, as well as explore the property by night.
Maximum number of hunters is three. Be sure to wear warm clothing and be prepared for some walking!

Clay Pigeon Shooting
Kauri Cliffs stunning topography is perfect for clay pigeon shooting. From a high vantage point with views over the Cavalli Islands and Pacific Ocean you will test your skills against our state of the art clay thrower.

This activity is suitable for all skill levels and no previous shooting experience is required.

Mountain Bikes
Men’s, ladies’ and children’s mountain bikes are available for guest use. Please enquire at reception. (Bicycles are not permitted on the golf course pathways).

Swimming Pool & Hot Tub
Our swimming pool is located between the lodge and first guest suite. The pool and hot tub are open from 7 am to 9 pm daily. During the cooler months, the pool is covered. Should you wish to use the pool or hot tub please call reception and we will remove the cover.

Tennis Courts
Two astro turf courts are situated at the end of the pathway behind the guest suites. Rackets and tennis balls are available at reception.

Basketball
A basketball hoop is located inside the tennis courts. This hoop is adjustable to suit all ages and skill levels. Please contact reception to arrange for the height to be adjusted.

Off Property Activities

Guests can enjoy Kauri Cliff's beautiful property and also experience a variety of nearby activities including world famous game fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, sea kayaking, and hunting for boar. Guided tours feature visits to the Ninety Mile Beach, Tane Mahuta, Doubtless Bay, the Puketi Kauri Forest, Rainbow Falls, historic Russell and the Waitangi Treaty House.

Bay of Islands Cruise
No trip to the region would be complete without “getting out on the water.” Explore the magical Bay of Islands and Northland coast aboard a luxury motor launch or sailing yacht guided by professional and knowledgeable crew. This aquatic paradise boasts over 144 islands, a shoreline of secluded bays and coves, prolific marine life and a colourful history.

Morning or Afternoon Cruise
Take a private three to four hour cruise that incorporates the historical and scenic highlights of the Bay of Islands. You will see the Stone Store, the oldest stone building in New Zealand, and the Marsden Cross, where in 1814 the Reverend Samuel Marsden delivered New Zealand’s first Christian sermon. This cruise also takes in the Kerikeri Inlet, the historic town of Russell (New Zealand’s first capital city), the Hole in the Rock, and secluded islands and coves. A light morning or afternoon tea is offered while your boat is at anchor in one of the many sheltered bays.

Bay of Islands Day Cruise
Enjoy a relaxed day afloat in the spectacular Bay of Islands. You will acquire a comprehensive overview of the region and have the opportunity to go ashore, swim, beach-comb or hike to a historic summit. A lunch of fresh local fare will be served while your boat lays anchor in a secluded cove.

Land and Sea
This is an ideal excursion for those who are short on time but still wish to acquire a comprehensive overview of the region. We have combined the Morning or Afternoon Cruise with a driving tour that covers the historic and scenic highlights of the area. We allow time for a relaxed lunch at a local winery or café and the opportunity to visit craft shops, museums or galleries.

Luxury Motor Launch
Enjoy the scenic and historical highlights of the Bay of Islands aboard a luxury motor launch designed to cater for larger groups or for those who desire an especially luxurious experience. This 55-foot vessel offers a grand platform for relaxing, dining or admiring the scenery while taking a more leisurely cruise of the inner Bay of Islands. This is an all day activity.

Large Luxury Charter Boat
The ultimate cruising experience. Cruise the Bay of Islands on Mission Hills, the largest private luxury charter boat in the region. Mission Hills is a 72-foot sea-going vessel. Charter of Mission Hills includes a skipper, deck hand and chef as well as the use of all water toys and kayaks. Diving, fishing and snorkeling are all available.

Sail the Bay
The Bay of Islands is top on the list for sailors. Explore the islands and bays aboard a well appointed 13.5 metre (44 feet) sailing yacht with an experienced skipper and crew. You can choose to join in or simply sit back and relax. Lunch and refreshments will be served in a sheltered bay with opportunities to go ashore to swim or beach-comb. This is an all day activity.

If the above vessels do not suit your needs, please enquire about alternatives. A range of motor launches is available for charter on a seasonal basis. We will gladly make arrangements to meet your requirements.

Quad Biking at Ninety Mile Beach and Scenic Drive
Enjoy a comfortable drive to the wild west coast in your private vehicle via some of Northland’s spectacular scenic roads. You will be greeted by your local guide who will brief you on the operation of safe, easy to ride 4WD quad bikes before you navigate the moonscape dunes and endless coastline of Ninety Mile Beach. Stop at the top of the panoramic mountains of sand to photograph the Pacific Ocean and the coast below. Following the two hour adventure, have lunch at the Mangonui Fish and Chip restaurant or stop at a Northland winery.

Drivers must be at least 15 years of age to operate quad bikes. Doubles are available by request for riders under 15 years old to be accompanied by an adult.

Salt Water Fishing
The Northland region of New Zealand is world famous for its clear waters and abundant fish life. Many world record game fish have been caught off this coast since American author and fisherman Zane Grey wrote about New Zealand fishing. Deep-sea anglers come in search of yellow fin tuna and the mighty marlin. Closer to shore, local reef fish such as snapper, kahawai and the powerful kingfish make the lighter tackle charters an exciting excursion for both the expert and the novice.

Horse Riding
We are pleased to offer equestrian adventure for all levels of riding ability. Ride with Kate Hewlett who has completed and placed in events such as the Burghley and Badminton Horse Trials and who was part of the New Zealand Olympic Team in 2004.

Explore Kauri Station and its surrounds on magnificent gentle horses, picking your way through native forest and our working farm to the beach, where you can ride on the sand and then enjoy a picnic lunch. Alternately you can join Kate on her farm in Kerikeri where you can ride in the sand arena, explore the cross-country course or trek over the easy rolling farm with tracks, forested areas and wide open spaces to ride through.

You will be matched with a suitable horse or pony depending on your size and ability.

All equipment will be supplied and we ask you to wear comfortable riding clothes and boots suitable for all weather conditions.

Scuba Diving
Marine flora and fauna are abundant in Northland. The local area has three primary diving sites. The first is the Rainbow Warrior wreck, a former Greenpeace vessel which was bombed by the French in 1985 and is now located just off the coast of Kauri Cliffs. The warm summer water and high visibility make this a stunning place to dive.

The second is the reefs, caves and caverns of the Bay of Islands coastline. The third and latest dive attraction is the decommissioned HMNZS Canterbury a Leander class navy frigate purposely scuttled to form an artificial reef at Cape Brett. All dives can be tailored to suit your abilities and interests. Experienced dive-masters are present for all parties.

Driving Tours and Excursions
Northland was the site of the first Maori and European settlements in New Zealand and consequently has an exceptionally rich history. It is perfect for a scenic, historic and cultural driving excursion. Highlights include the town of Kerikeri where the first Christian Mission settlement in New Zealand was established in 1819.

Often described as the “Cradle of the Nation,” Kerikeri is home to the Mission House, the oldest wooden building in New Zealand, and the Stone Store, New Zealand’s oldest stone building. You can also walk to the stunning Rainbow Falls through a serene track of native bush or take a guided tour of the Puketi Forest and its ancient kauri trees.

Another important site is the Waitangi Treaty Ground where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between Maori leaders and Queen Victoria in 1840. The Treaty Grounds are also an ideal place to see a Maori cultural performance.

Finally, the quaint whaling town of Russell, New Zealand’s first capital, can be reached by a short ferry ride from Paihia. Historic buildings in Russell include Christ Church, which still bears bullet holes from the Maori Wars. You can also enjoy the many galleries and craft shops. Be sure to take time to relax for lunch at a Northland winery or enjoy fresh local fare at one of the region’s cafés.
