Forest on this one day guided walk. Arguably the best remnant of
New Zealand podocarp forest remaining.
Unique native birds such as the
noisy kaka, kereru (NZ wood pigeon), and tui abound in this lush
environment. Whirinaki Forest and was saved from logging
just in time by a successful environmental campaign that captured
the nation's attention. English botanist and environmentalist
David Bellamy has cited Whirinaki as one of his most loved forests
in the world!
1-DAY ECO-CULTURAL
WALK
This full day tour provides a
window-look into the uses of this ancient rainforest by the early
Maori inhabitants of Te Urewera, the vast wooded mountain country
between the Central Plateau and the East Coast of the North Island
of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Included in this tour is a
leisurely walk of about 4.5 hours’ duration, graded easy and
suitable for all ages.
During you trip Maori guides will tell you something of the tribal
history of this isolated region, and provide flora and fauna
interpretation.
A relaxing luncheon on the banks
of the picturesque Whirinaki River is included, providing an
opportunity to experience the solitude and tranquility of one of
the least-used wilderness areas in Aotearoa.

GUIDED RAINFOREST TOUR
This tour is based on our
one-day eco-cultural walk, but is tailor-made to best suit your
own requirements, in terms of the duration of the walk component
and the addition of other activities in the Whirinaki area. It is
best suited for those who do not wish to participate in a
departure with others.
On this tour, a personal Maori
guide will take you on as much, or as little, of the usual one-day
walk route as you wish.
Additional features include complimentary wine at the end of your
time in the rainforest and a short visit to a historic Maori marae
(village complex) nearby.
